本系列教材在重视英语语言基本技能综合训练的同时，尤其重视高级认知能力培养，特别是批判性思维训练。此训练主要通过对解释、分析、评估、推论、说明和自我校准等核心技能的培养，旨在培育能够整合批判性思维的各种技能并加以有效运用，增强在不同学科学习和日常生活中运用这些工具的自信心、自觉性和具备良好判断的学习者。本教材供非英语专业博士研究生和较高水平的硕士研究生教学使用。
