Last, as mentioned above, dialogue interpreting takes place in institutional (health-care, legal, school, etc.) and business settings, and can be understood as being a particular type ofinstitutional interaction insofar as: a.it is related to the tasks the participants need to ac-complish, and b.involves at least one participant who represents a formal organization (Drew/Heritage 1992a: 3).As noted by Seed-house (2005: 5), talk for specific purposes can be informed by research on institutional or professional discourse using tools derived from conversation analysis.Dialogue interpreting has been taken into consideration in research only very recently and there is also very little known about interpreter-mediated interaction in many types of professional setting. To the best of our knowledge there is no EFL textbook specifically dealing with learning activities for dialogue interpreting.
This chapter provides an analysis of dialogue interpreting in two business settings, in-house business negotiations and business ex-hibitions.It is part of a wider project dealing with dialogue interpret-ing in institutional settings, also involving medical and legal inter-action (see Gavioli/Baraldi 2005).The focus ofinquiry in this chapter is on the interpreter role in the interactional organisation of the mediated exchange, and in particular on the types ofintervention that interpreters produce. The analysis considers procedures used by the interpreter to produce recognisable translations ofprincipal participant talk, and then focuses on interpreter productions of non-translation interventions.
